CSCS Smart Check

On 1 September, the UK’s ‘Failure to Prevent Fraud Law’, introduced under the ‘Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act’, came into force. Large organisations can now be criminally liable if staff or associates commit fraud for company benefit. To avoid prosecution, businesses must show they have reasonable fraud prevention measures in place, moving beyond reactive approaches.

The Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) is advising employers to use a verification tool called CSCS Smart Check to help construction firms check workers’ credentials faster and more reliably.

Why it matters

  • Smart Check can verify all cards that carry the CSCS logo, giving employers a single, trusted source for checking qualifications.
  • It helps reduce fraud, with digital and mobile-friendly checks making it harder to use fake or expired cards.
  • For sites and contractors, the rollout means smoother, more consistent access control and workforce verification.

How it works

  • Users can check cards via a mobile app, a web portal, or an API that connects with existing site access systems.
  • The system supports all the CSCS-branded cards in circulation, making it simpler for contractors managing multi-site or multi-scheme workforces.

What this means for your team

  • If you’re in charge of site access, you’ll want to integrate Smart Check so your entry systems align with the latest standard.
  • Staff and subcontractors who carry CSCS cards should expect that their credentials will be checked via the new platform.
  • It’s a good time to review your current card-checking process: is it efficient, and does it cover all card types and schemes?

How Aurelia can help

As part of our profiling process at the time of booking, Aurelia staff will discuss with employers or operators their requirements for holding the CSCS logo on cards — whether this is CPCS, NPORS, ALLMI, or IPAF.

To gain the CSCS logo, candidates are required to complete the CITB Health Safety and Environment Test relevant to the card/role you hold.

As a CITB-approved Internet Test Centre (ITC), we offer the Health, Safety & Environment (HS&E) Test at our site in Kentford, Newmarket.

Tests can be booked between:

  • Monday to Thursday: 8:30 am – 4:00 pm
  • Friday: 8:30 am – 3:00 pm

These can be taken as part of any training being carried out with us or as a standalone test.

For more information or to book, please visit our training calendar for current available slots or call us on 01638 751492.
